Suleiman I ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1520 to 1566. He was, or is, commonly known as Suleiman the Magnificent in the West and 'Kanuni' (the Lawgiver) in his realm. It was under his rule that the Empire reached the height of its power.
The Ottoman Empire is often referred to as the Turkish Empire, and this was accepted as an alternative answer.
